Every so often, my 6yo son asks if I can take him to “The Thinking Tree.” He asked this evening and we hopped on our bikes for the short ride to a large tree in the middle of a nearby park. Sometime last year, he discovered the tree which offers a perfect seat for his little body as long as he’s got someone there to boost him up.
I asked him why he liked the tree so much and what made him name it “The Thinking Tree.” His answer was what you’d expect, “So I can think.” But when I asked him what he thought about, he said more specifically, “It makes me think about things you and I can do together.”
It reminded me of how I like to connect with my Heavenly Father. I don’t have a tree, but starting every morning with a quiet time has become vitally important to me and holds the key to my day. I notice a difference in how my days go when I rush a quiet time or skip it all together because of other distractions or sleeping in later. They are stressful, chaotic and usually the days when I experience negativity.
On the other hand, steady and committed quiet times allow me to surrender my days to Him and not worry about my own agenda. It makes me think about the things He and I can do together.
Maybe I do have a “Thinking Tree” after all…
